The King of Nothing

This work started as a paper mache mask made in art class.

It was painted and otherwise finished. But after looking at it again,

I decided it needed to be repainted. Several failed attempts of repainting the mask

and I pretty much ruled it a lossed cause. For some reason I decided not to give up.

Glued it to a canvas and painted away. Resulting in the finished product.

These are some recent collages. I like the idea of taking things out of their
context and introducing them into new, unfamiliar environments. This works very well with
the photos I've been using from 60's national geographics. I plan to do as many more of these as
possible. They don't involve a whole lot of work, other than actually finding the right pictures, but they're just fun and rewarding.

So, I haven't done a piece for illustration Friday for way too long. So here's my entry albeit a loose interpretation of "Homage". I'd say this is an homage to psychedelic art (Peter Max, early Ray Johnson), but its also an homage to the art of collage. I finally created a piece of artwork that I can actually live with.
I think the only thing I'd ever touch up on this would be the feathers.
But its hard to know when to stop, maybe my resolution for 2008 will
be to learn to know when enough is enough, although thats something I'll
probably never resolve, but who knows. Happy New Years everybody!
